They had me at “rocking chair on the porch.” No really. Checking into the Pelican Grand Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after a nine and a half hour flight from London seemed all the more easy as I spotted a line of white rocking chairs on the porch in front of me. Southern charm was calling me home. There is nothing more romantic or more relaxing than rocking in a chair as ocean waves crash in front of you. Add a margarita to the mix and you have absolute euphoria.
“Euphoria,” is my word of the trip. There were more euphoric moments had at the Pelican Grand Beach Resort than can be counted on two hands. From a room with a view to a seafood platter that had me begging for mercy, this was a place for a true soul vacation. I was there for 48 hours only but felt as if I had been on vacation for ages. The staff were attentive to a degree that is unparalleled, the food was enough to make me sign up for a weight watchers app to prepare for my return to the UK and the rooms featured a decor that fit perfectly, not to mention comfortably, with a hotel that sits right on the beach. There was nothing pretentious here, yet there was certainly room for a great deal of snobbery considering the location of the premises. You can’t get much better, in fact. It seems every morning and every night the hotel had a direct dial to the sky, calling up the sun and the moon for guests to enjoy views that will leave you questioning your decision not to become a permanent resident.
There is no right or wrong time to book the Pelican Grand Beach Resort. Sure, you don’t want to show up in the middle of a hurricane (which is a harsh reality for any beach resort on the east coast), but even the heat shouldn’t turn you away. This is a space that caters to cooler and hotter than hell weather with a smoothness that makes any and every guest comfortable. I can definitely vouch for the heat as the thermometers dipped over 100 a few times while I was staying. The lazy river (oh the lazy river…), the pool and the beach allowed for fast cool downs, waiters were always on hand to make sure you had a drink in yours and afternoon naps in the air con with a view of the ocean were always an option. Can you tell I worked really hard while I was there?
This was the first time, in a long time, that I felt I was giving myself a real break from the world. I think the ocean does that for you, doesn’t it? However, when that ocean view comes with all the ingredients of living like a pampered princess, that’s when the real magic happens!
