Last week I found myself headed East, in London, for a taste of some good ole American cooking. Hoxton Grill has just reopened their doors with a new menu and a renewed space ready to host some hungry diners. Of course you should know by now that I’m not the type to sit down in such an establishment and order a salad. Hell no! When wings, chowder and burgers are on the menu, I think we both know my table is going to be overflowing with food.
And yes, it did come to a point where we were having to consolidate plates to fit all the food. Yes, somewhat embarrassing, but well worth the group effort. We were told we couldn’t leave without sampling the clam chowder, so we started our meal with a nod to the famous New England dish. To be honest, the meal could have finished with that bowl alone. A hardy bowl of soup sat before us and we both found ourselves practically licking the porcelain dish clean. And this was just the starter. It was truly the best clam chowder I’ve had in the UK to date. If visiting, this must be on order.
We chased our rather epic soup dish with an order of wings, a caesar salad (made with vinaigrette – a lovely change of pace that provided a very light alternative to the traditional caesar salad), and scallops. The main course was, of course, the burger and the flat iron chicken, which is the most incredible melt-in-your-mouth serving of poultry you will ever encounter on this earth.
Can you believe we had room for cheesecake at the end? How they didn’t roll us out of there, I will never know. But, one must be careful at Hoxton Grill, as the staff are so convincing. You ask what they love on the menu and they’ll give you a laundry list of favorites and go into detail about why they have such admiration for each dish. This is impressive. They are impressive. Even the atmosphere itself feels welcoming and home-like, if that home comes with wait staff and an insanely talented kitchen full of chefs.
The bottom line here is this. If you find yourself in Shoreditch, have a look in at Hoxton Grill. It’s well worth the attention whether you are popping in for a coffee and an Oreo cupcake or a full on culinary love affair with the New England Clam Chowder.
