So they say that doing anything for 10,000 hours is the key to success in any field. That’s what “they” say.
Today, we celebrate 10,000 posts on Fashion Foie Gras. That roughly translates to 10,000 hours of time devoted to making this blog happen. Truly, how the hell did that happen? Starting FFG nearly five years ago now, I began by spending 4-5 hours a night researching and writing, having no direction whatsoever. I wrote because I loved it. I wrote because I valued the conversations I began having with others about topics that had always fascinated me.
Two years ago last month, that 4-5 hours a night led to me quitting my full time job in PR and taking the site on as a career shift. To say that was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done in my life is an understatement. In fact, I would be lying if I said it still doesn’t keep me awake at night.
Yet, I keep thinking about this 10,000 hour rule. Does 10,000 hours of writing fashion and lifestyle make you a success? I am thankful for every single opportunity I’ve been given along the way, but even as I look back I’m not sure that 10,000 hours even scratches the service.
What I do know for sure is that a blog is only successful because of readers. And if I hadn’t had the support from you, dear reader, from the very start, I’m pretty sure FFG would have ended at post 100, rather than now celebrating 10,000.
So truly, this is simply a little love letter to you to say thank you. And it’s also a little seed planted for me in dreaming up that one day I’ll be able to hit a milestone of 100,000 with you. I will be old, grey and far less capable of doing 24 hour trips to far off places, but I’ll still be writing and hopefully will still have you around to call a devoted reader.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for reading daily and allowing me to have a “job” I’m forever thankful for. Here’s to the next 10,000 and beyond (I’m raising a glass of champagne in my mind).
