Dangerous Bottomless Bellinis- Get ‘em at Joe’s for brunch on Abbot Kinney

I have a second family in Santa Monica, one that is very dear to my
heart, and I had the great privilege of brunching with them the weekend before
I left to come home. It was recommended that we meet at Joe’s on Abbot Kinney as I was told this is THE place to brunch. It’s one of the original restaurants
on Abbot Kinney and is truly a gem in the community. While I’m not one to name
drop, I’ll just say we were waiting outside with the crème de la crème of
Venice society. Oh how cheesy that sounds.

After a quick glimpse of the menu, my eyes were immediately drawn to
the bottomless bellini. I asked our waitress what exactly that meant and she
looked at me like I was crazy. “It’s bottomless,” she said. “That means you
never get to see the bottom of your glass. It starts to look low and I come
over and fill it up again.” Well, I figured since I wasn’t driving I might as
well indulge. It wasn’t five minutes before a massive white wine glass was put
in front of me filled to the top with a Bellini mix. And true to her statement,
the glass never once reached the bottom, and we were sitting there for over
three hours. Not too shabby.

Now onto the food. This place is trouble, ya’ll, starting with the
very first plate they put in front of you. Home baked banana bread and toasted
brioche with jam and butter should be the way that every breakfast begins,
right? It didn’t take long for that to get polished off. Then it was onto an
appetiser we all shared – fruit drizzled with honey with a side of cheese and
sprinkled with almonds. Yum, yum in my tum! The piece de resistance, however,
was my order of pancakes. This is the American breakfast I dream of when I am
missing home terribly. Give me a pancake covered in syrup and I’ll show you the
biggest smile you can find on this planet.

Joe’s was delightful, delicious and down right perfect in setting up
the day. It was a marvellous brunch with good people, great service a joyous
atmosphere. This is the perfect place to catch up with friends over a long
leisurely meal.
