I’m not sure if this is more a spring summer 2013 trend report or rather a warning for the season to come. Midriffs are trending for spring summer 2013. See what I mean by the warning? Designers took great pleasure in showing off shrunken sweaters, bralets and even peplums of sorta that seem to frame a toned midsection, thanks J.W. Anderson. While not all of us are willing to done a Mickey Mouse sweater from Marc Jacobs that leaves our stomachs as more of a feature than the mouse himself, there is a way to work this trend without exposing yourself.
Baring the midriff is something most of us did in our teenage years. This isn’t to mean it’s now a no-no for all in fashion, but gravity and other life matters have altered the course of some of our six pack stomachs over time. For those of you not working washboard abs or who aren’t so comfortable with showing off your midsection next season, never fear. You can incorporate all the pieces that designers have showcased here by using them as part of a layering system. There’s nothing that says you can’t wear the Carven sweater over a tank. Or perhaps leave the tank and pair the sweater with some high waisted trousers. There’s your coverage. Unfortunately, for Jason Wu’s bralet, what you see is what you get. There’s not much layering there unless you want to team it with a white button down shirt tied at the waist with a bit of the JW top exposed. As far as Balenciaga is concerned, well, I’m scheduling my situps now for the next six months but this top just may not be in my future.
