Yesterday, a video was posted to Youtube featuring news anchor Jennifer Livingston. This was not your everyday anchor piece and that’s why I am sharing it with you today. Livingstone received an email from a viewer that called her out for being obese. He wrote:
It’s unusual that I see your morning show, but I did so for a very short time today. I was surprised indeed to witness that your physical condition hasn’t improved for many years. Surely you don’t consider yourself a suitable example for this community’s young people, girls in particular. Obesity is one of the worst choices a person can make and one of the most dangerous habits to maintain. I leave you this note hoping you will reconsider your responsibility as a local public personality to present and promote a healthy lifestyle.
Now for anyone in the public eye, you know that a thick skin is required when it comes to public opinion. There’s always going to be someone out there that disagrees with what you say or what you do and everyone at the end of the day is entitled to their opinion and most of us welcome criticism or healthy debate with open arms. However, this sort of behaviour, which is the cruelest and most hateful personal attack, is not to be tolerated, yet so many of us just turn a blind eye and go on with life knowing that the people that make these comments are truly the ones that have the problem. We’ve learned to adjust and move forward. Jennifer Livingston, however, has done a great service by speaking up and addressing a topic that is incredibly important. She’s talking about bullying and it’s a real problem today, especially with people being able to attack via the internet completely anonymously. It is ruining the lives of kids around the world and it’s the hardest thing to witness as so often there’s nothing we can really do about it as far as punishing the bully. Yet, there is something we can do about it as far as educating our children.
Jennifer sends this message at the end of her broadcast-
To all of the children that feel lost, who are struggling with their weight, the colour of their skin, their sexual preference, your disability, even the acne on your face…listen to me right now. Do not let your self worth be defined by bullies. Learn from my experience that the cruel words of one are nothing compared to the shouts of many.
I’d like to add something to that. Karma is a bitch. You know that old saying “you get back what you give out?” Well, every bit of that statement is true. And remember, bullies are only ever as effective as you allow them to be. I know it’s the easiest thing in the world to say out loud but it’s a mantra that is worth repeating.
You ARE in this world what YOU WANT TO BE. Never ever forget that. Please share this message with a friend who might need reminding. And leave a comment for Jennifer Livingston who has become a role model for many this week.
