Custo Barcelona is a brand that I was head over heels for twelve years ago. When the press office got in touch and asked me to come in and have a look around their new Westfield Stratford store (and the first Custo Barcelona store in the UK), I had an instant and rather “graphic” flashback to my first interaction with the brand. My mother bought me my first Custo Barcelona dress over parents’ weekend my freshman year at college. While these can easily be marked as my less than stylish years, this dress was like a breath of fresh air to a rather dull wardrobe. I was seduced by the bright colours and the elaborate designs that covered the dress. It was like a graphic party was being held right there from top to bottom on my cotton ensemble. I wore it until the colours had nearly faded to nothing and yet with age it actually appeared cooler. I wish for the life of me that I had a picture to share as this was truly a piece to remember.
The brand has progressed a great deal since it’s founding in 1981 and since my first purchase in 1998. The brothers Custo Dalmau and David Dalmau have an impressive celeb following that includes Charlize Theron, Shakira, Christina Aguilera and many more. Their runway shows in New York are some of the more “edgy” found in the city and still command a stellar front row attendance. However, to do this day I still find that an individual either loves or “doesn’t get” Custo Barcelona. Their style is one that is loud and proud and for many, especially stateside, such fashion declarations are preferably kept to a minimum.
From where I’m standing, I’ll always be a fan of this brand. Spring Summer was still in store and on sale at Westfield and I was lusting after gorgeous print trousers, summer maxi dresses and bold pieces perfect for festival goers. Oh, and don’t miss out on the accessories! This was a totally new arena for me but I love what I saw. Here’s a quick look at some of my favourite SS12 pieces still in store. Autumn Winter is dropping any day now so make sure to keep an eye out… If you are headed to Westfield, the store is located just across from the massive Apple store.
