Stephanie Hemphill, University of East London, Graduate Fashion Week 2010

Stephanie Hemphill’s show was titled “Smoking Altrasex”. Are you confused by the title? Perhaps the pieces made entirely of latex explain it a bit better? Apparently, Hemphill’s inspiration from the collection came from an old photograph of nuns smoking. She plays with the idea of sex versus religion in her line. The latex equals sex and the wool equals religion. I like it. It’s risky. It’s different. And most importantly, it goes against the grain and questions every day hypocrisy.

The highlight of the show was the closing gown with billowing fabric on the reverse that took my breath away. I could see this on Eva Mendes on a red carpet. “Smoking Altrasex” was smoking hot.
