I find more and more that there are evenings in your life that feel like they never happened at all. Moments so magical that it feels as if you are living someone else’s life, not your own. Spending an evening at Somerset House amongst some of the top names in fashion, viewing masterpieces from one of the most important names in the industry and trying to take it all in without feeling overwhelmed was how my evening went last night. Of course I could only be talking about one event. The event that everyone in the world of fashion and style has been waiting for all year…the opening of the Maison Martin Margiela exhibit at Somerset House in London. If you take one thing away from this piece please remember to visit this exhibition. If you miss this opportunity you will be kicking yourself for years to come. I have truly never seen anything like this in my life. I hope that the pictures you find herewith express that sentiment. I was floored and am still reeling.
The exhibition is truly overwhelming. Just when you think you have seen it all you discover another room. Somerset House says the following to describe what is on show:
Maison Martin Margiela ‘20’ The Exhibition, is a major exhibition celebrating 20 years of one of contemporary fashion’s most influential and enigmatic designers. This ambitious, multi-layered exhibition captures Margiela’s unique aesthetic and vision, incorporating garments, installations, photography and film. This exhibition was initiated by the Fashion Museum Province of Antwerp and Maison Martin Margiela.Young as its history is, no other fashion house has had quite the same impact on our understanding of fashion and its relationship to history, craft, commerce and innovation. 20 years on, Maison Martin Margiela’s radical questioning and rethinking of what fashion is, how we clothe the body and ideals of human beauty, are still as groundbreaking as ever.
Here are my images from the evening. I really do not want to ruin the activity of viewing the exhibition yourself so I have chosen to display mostly pictures of the party and a few images of the wears on show so that you may experience everything in your own way.
We could not have asked for a more gorgeous evening to enjoy good company, fabulous cocktails and wonderful canapes overlooking the Thames at Somerset House. The fashion gods were shining down upon us.
A few shots of the exhibition itself:
I had to prove a point here…someone thought they were taller than me at the exhibition…and I had to stand on my tippie toes to put them in their place! haha. Make sure and leave your mark on the exhibition wall.
The dress on the right below will stay with me forever. Even the boyfriend said he thought it should be part of my wardrobe….possible anniversary present perhaps?
