Ghesquière, the artist, for Balenciaga Autumn/Winter 2010

Where New York, London and Milan seemed to be quite dark and heavy for Autumn/Winter 2010, some designers in Paris are showing a lighter side for the season ahead. For Balenciaga we would go so far as to say that the colours were actually bright! We felt as if we were witnessing a season in between two seasons. Nicolas Ghesquière has given us an in-betweener. We will be calling this the Summer/Autumn Collection although it really feels ready to wear for Spring. If the fabrics weren’t so dense we would have thought we were indeed sitting at a Spring show.

The highlight of the show was the jacket. Nicolas has such a wonderful eye when it comes to the construction of a structured coat or jacket. He uses several different fabrics, square and rounded shapes, soft and hard composition, to achieve the ideal garment and one like no other that has graced a catwalk before. Ghesquière has once again pushed the envelope with his creations. Will we see a great many photographed over the coming year? Perhaps.  The wearability of the collection as a whole is questionable but the talent of the designer is proven once again.
