Bal Crillon des Debutantes 2009

posted on: Monday, 30 November 2009

Twenty-four young ladies gathered in Paris this Thanksgiving weekend for their grand introduction to society while most of us were battling it out for bargain basement prices in shops.
Here are some highlights of those who attended and what they wore.
In attendance and what they wore:
Lady Kitty Spencer wore Bruce Oldfied
Jane Aldridge wore Chanel Haute Couture
Autumn Whitaker wore Jason Wu
Virginia Tournon wore Atelier Versace
Adrishree Singh wore Ritu Beri
Ariel Ho-Kjaer wore Dior Haute Couture
Johanna Platon de Turckheim wore Constantine Wolfrom
Francesca Eastwood wore Dolce & Gabbana Couture
Antonella de Lutio wore Zuhair Murad

And a few shots from the night...

Make sure and check out Sea of Shoes (one of the web's best bloggers) as she attends the Crillon ball. She is being outfitted by Chanel and we couldn't be more green with envy...seriously looking like Kermit the Frog here.

Carla Bruni wears Stella McCartney Gap for Kids for Duet

Thank you Grazia for capturing this photo!
I guess one of the grown ups did benefit from the low priced Stella McCartney line recently released at Gap? Now the question is...did Carla go and queue up outside the store with everyone else the morning of the launch? Somehow I think not! Can you say "using your fame for fashion"? Love it, and we certainly would do the same if given the chance.

Carla looked smashing on french TV for her duet with Harry Connick Jr.

How appropriate then, as well, that Carla and Harry should sing a song from the Beatles catalogue on stage. Paul McCartney certainly did pass on his creative genius. We can't get enough of Stella's pieces in the closet. Well played McCartney family on being wonderful generation after generation and well done Carla for pulling off a kiddie's coat!

Gold stars all around.

Did you hear the one about the fashion shoot and the Holocaust memorial?

Sadly I am not referring to a sick joke. This really happened and Easyjet is the brainchild behind the catastrophic mistake. An eight page photo-shoot at the museum was published in the latest edition of the Easyjey inflight magazine, which has seen been pulled from backseats on the planes. The New Statesman was one of the first to pick up on the horrific tale told.  Apparently the company didn't even know that the photographs had been taken at the memorial until the New Statesman contacted them on the afternoon of November 20th. Those involved in the photoshoot did not find it necessary to seek permission to use the site for the project which in itself is a huge problem.

In a statement to the New Statesman, the airline said:
"easyJet profusely apologises to anyone who may be offended by the inappropriate fashion photo shoot at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin featured in this month's issue of the in-flight magazine."
"The magazine is produced by INK -- an external publishing house, and easyJet were not aware of the images until they appeared in print. As a consequence we are now reviewing our relationship with the publisher and are withdrawing this month's issue from all flights."
"easyJet prides itself on bringing together a wide range of cultures and beliefs and is appalled by this insensitive and inconsiderate photo-shoot, the aim of which was to highlight some of Berlin's iconic landmarks and certainly no offence was meant."

For those who will attend the opening of an envelope this season...

Your credit card is most likely in some serious pain for having to purchase a new dress for every event at which you may or may not be photographed. Well one staple for every wardrobe is the little black dress. Well what if there were a magical LBD that could be switched and swapped into endless combinations so that it always looks like a new dress? That is the sort of thing fairytales are made of...certainly not possible in reality right?  Think again. We have yet another reason to worship at the altar of Donna Karan. I give you...

While your checking out the website be sure and download her new iphone application....yes, we bow down and worship to a great American fashion genius.

Orange you wonderful Mrs. Obama

Ok I have never, ever met a woman that looks good in Orange, until now. Michclle Obama looked amazing this week in an orange brocade dress designed by Isaac Mizrahi.  She is seen here standing with Indian First Lady Gursharan Kaur. Well done Mrs. Obama. We are loving the looks...they just keep getting better and better. Let us know if you are looking for a fresh style council ;)

Update: She also wore an amazing Naeem Khan gown for the State dinner...

Cheryl Cole, bad dress and fake hair

She's been in the news a lot lately and it hasn't all been good press. Apparently that lovely loreal ad which had us all lusting after her locks was done with Mrs. Cole sporting some serious hair serious in fact that it is rumoured they cost over $3000 to attach. What a great disappointment. Although good to know my jealousy can lay to rest for now.  And one thing I am certainly not jealous of is Cheryl's atrocious taste in clothes. Leave something to the imagination dear....

Pirelli Calendars...the gift worth giving this year....

posted on: Wednesday, 25 November 2009

So you're wondering what to get the boyfriend this year, miss style queen? I wish I could say it would be easy to get your hands on one of the most desired calendars of the 21st century but alas its popularity has been created in part because it is nearly impossible to get one. The Pirelli calendar is not available for purchase as it is gifted to Pirelli clients and certain VIPs.

The images this year are absolutely breathtaking and blogs have been overflowing with the images that were released last week. Terry Richardson shot the ladies this year, in all of their glory. Our favourite month will most certainly be the one featuring Daisy Lowe and Catherine McNeil stuck in together in a rather small tire.

The calendar was first published in 1964 as a tool for the trade. It lasted for ten years, shutting down in 1974 due to an economic crisis.  Ten years later in 1984 the calendar was resurrected. The calendar has featured some serious power players in the world of fashion including: Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Monica Bellucci, Sophie Dahl, Heidi Klum, Kate Moss, Doetzen Kroes, Flippa Hamilton and Lily Cole (just to name a few).

So why not save yourself a lot of time and effort and buy your loved one a copy of the The Complete Pirelli Calendars book.  It's well worth it and it's something you both can enjoy. He gets to look at naked women and you get to check out amazing photography and take in even more inspiration to stick to a strict diet and exercise regime for the new year.

Here are some oldies, but goodies, from previous calendar years...

Abercrombie to get new owner?

posted on: Tuesday, 24 November 2009

The Cut reported yesterday that PPR owner, Francois-Henri Pinault, is looking to invest his money in brands that are less high-end and more middle america mall. Not a bad move to make during a recession. He's also looking at investing in Ralph Lauren and Levi's.  He's got a lot of love for the traditional American brand!

Gap Stella McCartney for the kid in us all!

When the Stella McCartney range for kids and babies was released last month we all tried our hand at fitting into the biggest sizes for little girls. Unfortunately very few of us are still shaped like a 13 year old! So there were a lot of tears shed and dreams crushed. Well for those of you down in the dumps with disappointment I have some good news. Stella has created a t-shirt for the Gap RED campaign. So get in there and grab it now while it is still available online! Merry Christmas!

Look ugly to look great?

MBTs might be great for your legs but why on earth would you wear them in public? It isn't worth it. You might as well just have horrible cellulite covered thighs. How about you just go for a run or eat a little less? Don't spend $400 on boots that are is better spent on Jimmy Choo boots that also make your calves ache but have the added benefit of making your legs look amazing at that very moment in time!
Sorry MBT but just because you put them into boot style doesn't make your creation any less revolting.

Beyonce's unlimited spending budget

Grazia is reporting that Beyonce Knowles had quite the little shopping extravaganza in London recently...spending over £20,000 in Harvey Nichols of Knightsbridge.

Here's a list of what she went home with:
Gladiator Crystal Sandals £1675
Christopher Kane for Versus bombshell clutch £825
Rodarte biker jacket £2275
Moschino Safety pin matador jacket £2845
Alexander Wang studded duffle bag £820 (this season's "it" bag)
Leather capelet £570
Leather hooded biker jacket £1235
13R vintage biker jacket £1315
Jade Jagger Jezebel tee £85
Philip Lim 3.1 gold sequin tux jacket £790
cashmere leggings £415
Erickson Beamon necklace £795
Lara Bohinc bracelet £365
Lara Bohinc Earrings £310
Eres Bikini £150
Juicy Bikini £130
Marc Jacobs Bikini £170
Missoni Mare Bikini £170

Well looks like Beyonce will be rocking the motorcyle riding, bikini wearing jewelled up look...I was wondering when that look would come back in style B!

Jennifer dressed at AMA's

She pretty much blows the competition out of the water when it comes to style this year at the AMAs. Who cares if she fell during her performance? She covered and looked amazing. Give your stylist a big Christmas check this year Lopez...she's done good!

She wore Gucci and rocked out Marchesa....(does everyone in Hollywood own one of her dresses?)

Demi Moore's cover a montage?

posted on: Monday, 23 November 2009

Well it seems the cover of W magazine could be more than one picture...scratch that, more than one person, made into one to create the perfect over image. Popculturemadness is receiving more hits than they ever could have imagined today because of their claim that the body of Demi Moore on the cover of this month's W magazine is actually the model who walked the dress in catwalks, Anja Rubik.

Take a look at the pictures and tell us what you think.

Tavi Savvy headed for Tokyo

posted on: Saturday, 21 November 2009

Why oh why didn't I start blogging at the tender age of thirteen? (probably because I didn't give a toss about clothing... or even know the difference between Hermes, Ralph Lauren or Gucci).

WWD has reported that the young blogger, Tavi Gevinson, is headed to Tokyo to do a series of photoshoots with journalists in the region as well as participating in the holiday party for Comme des Garcons. This little legend has become queen the princess of the fashion world. Her blog, Style Rookie is amazing. Could we be looking at the future editor-in-chief of Vogue? Watch out Anna Wintour...your replacement has been found and is being well taken care of by everyone who is anyone currently in the fashion world. Rock on Tavi...

Victoria's Secret Lingerie Show 2009

It was like a neverending bad Lady Gaga video only the women were gorgeous. Someone explain to me why you would take perfect beauties and put them in horrendous getups? All I could think was "prostitute walking."  The only redeeming quality of the show had nothing to do with the clothing on display - it was the women wearing the clothing. Perhaps the statement being made was this - You can put a model in anything, no matter how horrific and she will still light up a room.  Let's hope this is not a sign of things to come for Victoria's Secret. I doubt very many ladies were impressed but at least the VS has been kind enough to give thirteen year old boys some new screensavers.
(Oh and the hair did look great. Bedhead is so in!)

A great loss

Daul Kim was pronounced dead yesterday morning. She was found in her flat in Paris and it is initially thought that the cause of death was suicide. She had hung herself. Some of you may know Daul from her amazing blog but most will recognize the name as she was a fantastic fashion model who has been seen on catwalks from New York to Milan.  On the night of the 18th, the night before her death, her final blog post was titled "Say hi to forever" and featured the following a video from youtube of Jim Rivers "I go deep". If you are familiar with her posts you will remember that a great deal of her writing seemed sad, lonely and a cry for help.  The world of modeling can be so difficult and challenging for the mind as all day everyday you are merely a pretty face. It can make or break some people from within.  I had hoped Daul would allow it to be her making but I am sad to report she is another victim of a harsh world.

Smart PR people at FrostFrench

posted on: Thursday, 19 November 2009

You have to hand it to them. They have spotted quite the opportunity to shove their brand into the limelight. Gemma Ward has been on everyone's mind lately whether we like it or not.

After Bryanboy posted pictures of her looking like a normal human being in a leopard print jacket the fashion world went crazy over losing one of it's best selling models to an average figure size.

While the majority of bloggers, editors, partygoers, etc were speaking of her demise the good ole people at FrostFrench were smart enough to see an opening.

If she is so in the limelight now why not be the good guys and hire her to model for the brand and grab the attention of the "everyday" girl. Not a bad idea at all. I do wonder though if Gemma will go for it. Let's wait and see how this one pans out.

Isabeli Fontana in December US envy much?

Showing that mono is the way to go for the holiday season ahead. Go crazy with the accessories and stay basic with the colours in fabrics.

Naomi Campbell rocks Dolce and Gabbana for the Valentino Movie premiere

If anyone can pull off this look it is Naomi and it makes me jealous as hell. I wonder if her sugar daddy, billionaire Vladislav Doronin (pictured) bought her the scrubs?

GQ Man of the Year shows off some style winners too

January Jones, Jennifer Carpenter, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Shenae Grimes, Maggie Grace, Gabrielle Union, Zoe Saldana, AnnaLynne McCord along with many others came out to celebrate the GQ Man of the Year awards at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. Here are our top scorers for style on the evening in question.

JC Penney says goodbye to a big book legend

WWD reported today that this will be the first year that the phonebook sized catalogues (they have been upwards of 1500 pages in the past) from J.C. Penney will not land on doorsteps across America. Apparently they are making their catalogues more frequent and more specialized. We will see what that ends up meaning. More importantly can someone tell me if they sent out there huge Christmas buster?

"Big book catalogs have become less relevant as customers have embraced shopping online, where they have ready access to our entire assortment at any time on," said Mike Boylson, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for JC Penney

They certainly have taken to technology like a duck to water. Their website has been driving sales forward since it's launch and JCP has kept up to speed with new developments like the iphone...with applications and upgrades always at the ready. They can't be blamed. They are growing with the rest of the world. It is just particularly sad to accept this sort of change. It was nice to receive a catalogue that would take hours to digest. Something you could sit down with under a blanket, with a cup of tea and just flip through page by page with no particular purchase in mind.

They have also come along way with aligning themselves with trendy looks and celebrity idols. Some examples over the years have been there Ralph Lauren Chaps-like label "American Living" which was launched in 2008.

And most recently we have been given Cindy Crawford's take on how the home should be...all courtesy of the great JCP....

JCP makes up a part of the backbone of American retail. It isn't going anywhere. So for those panic stricken folks out there. Buy a computer to get your JCP fix and save a few trees. (oh god, I just went earth friendly).

The Supermodels are back in town

2009 seems to be a big year for the return of the 1980s supermodel.
Yet another cover sporting some model legends, this time with Eva Herzigova, Helena Christensen and Claudia Schiffer. The cover was shot by Kayt Jones. Bring back the uber beast!

Nothing to do with fashion...

But we just couldn't resist...his style is raw and rugged...and we have to agree with the statement people are making here...
Johnny Depp is the Sexiest Man Alive (in the movies anyway).
